Freeholder Edward O’Connell was elected to the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders on November 3, 2009 and was sworn into office on January 7, 2010. He is married to Terri and they have two children; Samantha, and Edward. He and his wife have resided in Passaic County for 39 years and are parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Wanaque.

Edward O’Connell graduated from De Paul Catholic High School in 1987 and attended Berkley College in 1993. He was a Wanaque Soccer Coach from 1985-2003 and served as the Wanaque Soccer President from 1998-2003.

Outside of County Government, he has owned and operated Ed O’Connell Construction from 1993 to the present. He has been a member of the Wanaque Fire Department from 1993 to the present.

O’Connell was appointed to the Wanaque Council in 2001, where he served as Councilman until his resignation in December 2009 in order to assume his position as Freeholder. While on the Council, he served as Chairman for the Water Department, Buildings & Grounds, Road Department, Shared Services, Negotiations, and as Wanaque Council President in 2007.

As Councilman, he was a member of the following Committees; the Board of Adjustments for five years, the Planning Board for four years and has been a member of the Passaic County Police Chiefs Association from 2007 to the present.

In 2011, Freeholder O’Connell is a member of the Planning Committee and the Law and Public Safety Committee. He serves as a Commissioner of Camp Hope and is the Board’s representative to the Office of Emergency Management. He is a member of the Passaic County Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT Team).

Freeholder O’Connell believes that his varied governmental experiences, volunteer work and involvement in the community has prepared him to address the many needs and challenges that face the residents of Passaic County.

He will never forget the residents of Passaic County who thought enough of him to elect him to the Board of Chosen Freeholders and will continue to work everyday on their behalf.
